There are lots of things you carry with you when heading into the mountains and when you’re a fan of backcountry snowboarding and skiing, an airbag should be one of them. This Mammut Ride RAS airbag backpack is specially designed to be functional and to save lives. The safest way is to avoid avalanches altogether, but when you do encounter them, Mammut designed their airbag to inflate in three seconds helping you to stay on the surface.
The airbag will deploy after you pulled the shoulder-mounted deployment handle. Meanwhile the backpack’s waist belt, safety leg straps and sternum strap will keep the pack securely attached to your body. After deployment, deflate the airbag and follow the instruction the put them back into the backpack. Don’t forget to replace the compressed air canister.
This backpack also has all the handy features of a modern freeride pack, like ski and snowboard carry systems and gear loops for ski poles or ice axes. You can even cinch down your day’s load using the back’s side compression straps. It also has aluminium frame that allows it to carry weight comfortably. However this airbag backpack doesn’t include the refillable compressed air cartridge, which is sold separately.
Please note: an airbag system is not a guarantee that you will survive an avalanche; so get educated, get the right tools and be smart on the mountain.
