Despite the recent growth in number of action cameras on the market today, there are only a few companies that gave their camera new features outside standard improvements such as resolution and frame rates. Garmin is a big name in the world of GPS, where it produces in-car navigation systems and personal navigation devices used by many outdoor enthusiasts. It therefore became a logical step for Garmin the launch their own action camera with incorporated GPS technology.

The design of the Garmin Virb Elite stands out. It has a mixture of a bullet and box design, which makes it a bit larger than its competitors. However, the extra size does make the camera easy to handle, with quick and easy access to the buttons placed on the side of the casing. The camera’s small screen has a low resolution, compared to nowadays smartphones, but its easy to use and allows you to quickly adjust settings when needed.

The camera offers a maximum video resolution of 1080p at 30 frames per second and although the options for video resolution are limited the actual video quality is quite good, with natural colours showing plenty of detail. Where this camera really stands out its GPS feature as it automatically records your location. When editing your footage you can use that data in any way that you see fit.

Apart from a mobile app, Garmin also supplies its own software for editing videos. Although its relatively basic and to some ‘a bit old fashioned’ it does the job really well and its definitely worth trying out. Overall the Garmin Virb Elite is a well designed camera with a conservative approach. It offers good list of features, but doesn’t push the boundaries. It offers the basics but does this in a well balanced way that will appeal to many everyday outdoor users. Ideal for recording your winter adventures.
