Last year GoPro launched a new entry-level model to join its famous action camera series. Priced at around $220 the all new GoPro Hero+ provides users a view of the action for less money. The main difference between the older lower priced GoPro Hero and this new version is its colour LCD screen. Action cameras with live-view screens, with or without touch control, are a rarity and that definitely gives this GoPro camera an edge in comparison to some of its main rivals.
Compared to the GoPro Hero, the Hero+ is fitted with both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, which allows you to connect the camera with the GoPro remote control that basically replicates the camera’s controls. Quite useful for changing shooting modes or start and stopping recordings. The GoPro remote control is not included inside the package and need to be ordered separately. With its wireless connectivity you can also connect the camera to your mobile device and use the GoPro app to control the camera.
Beyond that, the new Hero+ also has a higher-resolution sensor with 8 megapixels as opposed to the older sensor with 5 megapixels. This resulted in noticeably better video and photo quality. Video resolutions include 1080p at 60 frames per second and 720p at 60fps. A feature we really liked is GoPro’s Auto Low Light, which drops the frame to make sure your video won’t be too dark when recording in dim light. For casual viewing on a smartphone or tablet you won’t be disappointed by the quality of the recordings. As with most cameras viewing on larger screen does create some distortion and artefacts.
Although the new GoPro Hero+ is a bit high priced for its entry level shooting options and overall performance, its one of the few action cameras available today with a built-in live-view screen. If you’re looking to simplify your recording experience then this camera is worth considering.
- Integrated LCD screen is a big plus.
- Connectivity via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
- Improved 8 megapixels image sensor.
- Very good quality video recordings.
- Camera sits permanent in its housing.
- Battery can’t be removed and replaced.
- Not a bargain for its entry level specs.
