Action cameras have become popular in the last few years. After GoPro had a huge success with its action cameras, other companies have tried to create their own. Now Polaroid has arrived into the action camera market with its colourful Polaroid Cube, which takes an entirely different approach. Its concept is more a life-logging camera than a full blooded action cam. Measuring only 1.5-inches on each side, it’s small, cute and simple to use. Ideal for youngsters or those of us who don’t want a overly complicated camera. While the signature Kodak rainbow design makes the camera stand out, a clever magnetic bottom allows you to easily attach the camera to any metal surface.

The Cube records 1080p HD video and 6 megapixels photos. By design, it’s quite a simple camera that has a compact light-weight square shape. It’s small size allows you to easily hold it in your hand or between your fingers or carry it in any clothing pocket. Although this camera isn’t fully rugged, its rubberised body is made to be water resistant and can handle splashes of water. The outer body feels strong and durable.

On the front of the camera you will find its 124-degree wide-angle lens and a microphone. The Cube has only one button placed on top of the camera, which serves as the main power button, video recording button and photo shutter button. Compared to the more expensive action cameras, you won’t find any advanced shooting modes or settings. The camera has an LED indicator that lights up green when on standby and blinks red to signal that you’re recording a video or taking a photo.

On the back, behind the small cover, you will find the camera’s Micro USB port, a Micro SD memory card slot and one switch to select 1080p video recording or 720p. The cover offers a tight seal for waterproofing, so you will need a coin to open and close. Probably due to its lower price, the Cube is not equipped with a LCD screen, so you can’t play back content or watch a live image. The camera also doesn’t have Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connectivity in order to pair it with your smartphone. Instead you need to connect the camera to your computer for transferring your files or adjusting the camera’s settings.

Overall the Polaroid Cube may not be as tough as the GoPro cameras or as a high-quality handheld camera, but for just 99 Dollars it’s a well-build, easy-to-use action camera that offers a fun way of capturing your adventures from new perspectives. It also has a certain charm about it.

Update: Polaroid recently launched a new version, the Cube+, which has Wi-Fi connectivity and a companion app for iOS and Android, making it mobile friendly. The camera records at full HD 1080. Photo resolutions has been increased to 8 megapixels.
