Back in 2013 a crowd funded project know as the Tile became an instant hit, acquiring 2.5 million dollars in funding from nearly 50.000 backers. The secret to its great success is quite simple: Tile promised to help users locate any object that’s attached to a coin-sized Bluetooth connected tag for around 20 dollars. This seemed like a no-brainer and we immediately signed on as one of the first backers.
The Tile Bluetooth Tracker will cost you 25 dollars (discounts on packs with multiple Tiles) and has the size of a small matchbook. In order to keep track of multiple things, you will have to buy more than one. The Tile has a hole for key rings so you can easily attach it to your keys or other items. You can also stick it, by using the included adhesive squares. Tile is water resistant and made out of durable material.
Tile is helpful for those of us who tend to misplace or lose common stuff like keys or a wallet. How does it work? Once you lose an item with a Tile attached to it you can simply use the Tile app to ping it via a Bluetooth connection. Tile will play a melody until you’ve confirmed you’ve found the item. A real-time signal-strength indicator will help you to get close enough to the Tile to hear it.
When your item is too far out of range you can use the app’s Community Find feature to locate it. Tile doesn’t have a GPS tracker, so it relies on other Tile users who have the Tile app to find your item. Every person who keeps the Tile app open on their phone becomes a node in a much larger Tile network. By leveraging this combined tracking power of thousands of Tile users, the normal 150-foot Bluetooth radius is amplified many times over. An unique feature we really like.
Overall, the Tile Bluetooth Tracker does exactly what it claims. It offers an easy, intuitive and convenient way to find your misplaced or lost items by using your smartphone. Ideal for those of us who want to keep track of their stuff during a winter holiday. Start with Tile and lose less of everything!
